Premium wood choices
We use the finest quality naturally antimicrobial woods: both aromatic woods and hardwoods. Yes, that’s right, all of our wood tubs are handcrafted from wood species that are naturally antimicrobial (aka rot-resistant) and water-resistant. We use only carefully selected premium, vertical grain, heartwood lumber.
The outside surfaces of our finished tubs are oiled and waxed to a warm glowing finish, while the inside surfaces are left unfinished to achieve a warmth and softness that synthetic materials cannot, and to allow the hot water to draw out the amazing natural aromas of the wood!

Hinoki
Revered for its unique, lemon-ginger fragrance and natural rot resistance, Hinoki Cypress wood is regarded as sacred in Japan. Indistinguishable from it’s Japanese sibling, American Hinoki (aka Port Orford Cedar) provides the classic appearance and aroma; for this reason it is our most popular wood choice.
Hinoki is a light colored wood with overall tone being quite consistent. The variation spans strawberry blonde to creamy off-white to slightly caramelized gold.
Red Cedar
An abundant species from the Pacific Northwest, Western Red-Cedar dazzles with natural variation. The sweet scent of cedarwood combined with its powerful antimicrobial properties make it excellent for building ofuros.
Color palette includes blonde, pink, red, & brown in delightful combination, providing for especially one-of-a-kind pieces. Aroma spans bright apple-cider vinegar to warm chocolate cherry.
Teak
Treasured and revered by wooden boat builders, teak wood offers elegance & durability. Due to a very high oil content, Teak is extremely resistant to water, wind, and weather with minimal maintenance. As a hardwood, Teak is dense and durable and is an ideal choice for outdoor, high-traffic use, & commercial installations.
Due to US sanctions against Myanmar, high-quality Teak lumber is currently unobtainable. At the time of writing, we still have some pre-sanction Teak in stock. Contact us for availability.
Iroko
Iroko is a premium tropical hardwood from Africa that shares many desired qualities with Teak. It is hard and strong, and has excellent water-resistant properties. Even the appearance is similar to Teak, with the same dark- to golden-brown coloration.
Iroko is an excellent choice for maximum durability, and is an ideal alternative to Teak.
Hybrid
Aromatic softwood interior, Durable hardwood exterior
The Zen Bathworks Hybrid Hinoki & Teak Ofuro combines the elegance & durability of teak (exterior) with the revitalizing, natural aroma of hinoki (interior). This offers a tantalizingly unique overall contrast. Customize the tub rim & rail feet with either wood choice to fine tune the final look to your preference. A Zen Bathworks exclusive, the Hybrid is the best of both “woods”!
Sapele
Like its close relative Mahogany, Sapele is a beautiful hardwood with dark to medium red tones that shimmer with chatoyance.
Sapele can be used on the interior, though it does not provide an aroma. Alternatively, it is an excellent match with a fragrant red-cedar interior as a Hybrid.
White Oak
White Oak is a classic hardwood with a rich American and European history. Although White Oak has been used for everything from wooden ships to wooden barrels, our testing leads us to conclude that it’s best used on the exterior of our Ofuros, where it pairs handsomely with fragrant Hinoki on the inside for a classic American look, and a traditional Japanese experience.
...and more
Have a wood in mind that isn’t listed here? While only certain woods are suitable for use on the inside of an Ofuro, there are a few others (such as Redwood, Cypress, or Alaska Yellow Cedar). There are many, many more wood types that can be used on the exterior of a Hybrid tub, such as Walnut, Khaya, Larch and more. Have a wood type in mind?
